Budget Decorating Ideas

I recently offered to keep my eyes open for a couch for my son. A cool ‘command central’ station that fits his budget. He is most definitely doing his decorating on a budget. I’m constantly searching for stock for my vintage stores. Let’s face it, I’d like to re- decorate his entire post-college, couch-surfing apartment, however in the spirit of being a better parent, I’ve decided to simply email him links to my shopping haunts, at least I can save him some time. Some of these also offer online stores.

Perfect colorful addition as an end table.

Perfect colorful addition as an end table and within his budget.

Find a flea market near you with FleamarketsacrossAmercia by state listing, they also have a list of swap meets. He might go to the flea market in Fremont . . . there are good restaurants and bars in the vicinity. See my flea market calendar for deets.

EstateSales.net is a great website that allows you to search by state or zip code, and will notify you of estate sales in your area. This is a great option for him. He can’t go on Friday’s but he can hit the real bargains on Sundays. Estate companies often offer 25 to 50% mark downs on Sunday.

Habitat ReStores or Thrift Stores
Search throughout the U.S. and Canada to find your local Habitat ReStore location. Though each ReStore is different, most carry all types of home goods, from kitchen cabinets to furniture to home accessories to appliances. Proceeds go to Habitat for Humanity, a non-profit organization. These are great stores for bargains and there is a feel good aspect to your purchase. I frequent a store thrift store which passes their proceeds to doggy care and adoption. What’s not to love?

Recycle stores, Goodwill and Salvation Army

I frequent, SecondUse.com. Great store with building materials, salvage and vintage and they have an online shop! I also love earthwise/salvage.com, a bit more expensive than seconduse but well worth the look and the employees are good with re-purposing ideas. Goodwill and Salvation Army both have fairly consistent sales off already very inexpensive goods.

CraigsList.comI’ve sold some things on Craigslist and been happy with results. I take only cash and meet in a public place. I’ve tried to buy a few things but I didn’t react quick enough and missed the deal.
